Why did you start your YouTube channel?

I started my YouTube channel to showcase my multicultural family, which turned into a cooking show. I always enjoyed cooking and sharing recipes with my family ever since I was a young teen. Now, I share recipes with the world.

Tell us about your food journey. What inspired your passion for cooking?

My passion for cooking started when I was very young. Both my paternal and maternal grandparents had their own unique way of cooking for the family. I was very young when I realized that cooking and food brought the family together. This was how I related happiness and food. I liked to watch my maternal grandmother make flour tortillas as a kid. She is currently in her late eighties, and now I make them for her.

Your family is a melting pot of Mexican and Korean cultures. How have the two cultures influenced your cooking style?

I have been married for ten years now and am still learning new ways to fuse Korean and Mexican cuisine in the kitchen. My main goal is to recreate something that reminds my husband of his home in Korea when it comes to Korean dishes. I mainly rely on Skype calls with my Mother-in-law for guidance and recipes. Hopefully, one day soon, I will travel to visit my family in Korea and cook with her. I think the best part about cooking any type of cuisine is discovering new tastes and flavors to add to family favorite meals.

What are your favorite recipes to make for your family?

I think my favorite recipe is soft flour tortillas. Both my husband and eldest son can make tortillas. This is something that we can all pitch in and make together. Saturday breakfasts are the one day a week I make a big meal to start the day. It can be a french toast breakfast, tacos, or even Korean cuisine influenced.

Can you share with us some kid-friendly tips you use to ensure your kids eat healthy, balanced meals?

My tip for picky eaters is the great veggie sneak hack. My youngest son is autistic with food aversions and has food allergies. A balanced meal is still a challenge for him. To get him to eat veggies, I purée them and sneak them into pizza sauce, muffins, or even waffles.

How I get my son to eat spinach:

What do you draw from to inspire you to create each new recipe?

My greatest source of inspiration is my family. It always has been. Even before marriage, I loved cooking for my Mom, Dad, sisters, and extended family. Then as I got older and started a family of my own, my cooking skills improved and the requests for meals kept coming. Just this morning, my son requested banana brown sugar pancakes from the time we survived the snowstorm earlier this year. He now ties brown sugar banana pancakes with us huddled around the fireplace, playing board games, trying to stay warm.

What’s next for you and Simply Mama Cooks in 2021 and beyond?

Well, later this year, I will be launching a limited edition spice blend mix. I have a lot of followers that live abroad and miss the flavors of home. I came up with dry spice blends to make that accessible to them. I may also work on my second cookbook as well. Other than that, I’m not sure, but I hope it involves cooking!
