Blueberries may be small, but they are unique in several ways - they’re packed with huge amounts of antioxidants and they are the only food that is naturally blue in color!

Blueberries are one of only three fruits native to the United States. Native Americans used to dry blueberries and use them to extract blue pigment for painting and dyeing.

It is best to eat blueberries up to 10 days after they are purchased.

Blueberries should be refrigerated in their original packaging or in a covered bowl to keep them from drying out.

Clever Uses

Does your skin need some TLC? Combine ¼ cup mashed blueberries, one tablespoon olive oil, and one tablespoon honey, mix until smooth, and apply to your face for at least 20 minutes. Your skin will be left smoother and less oily.

Annoying under eye circles? Crush cold blueberries with aloe vera, apply to your under-eye area and let sit for at least 5 minutes. Remove with warm water.

Make all-natural Easter egg dye by boiling 1 pound of crushed frozen blueberries, 1 tbsp white vinegar, and 2 cups water.

Cooking Tips

Don’t select berries based on their size, but rather by their color. Dark bluish, purple berries are the ripest; they should look plump, feel firm, and have smooth skin.

To avoid bruising and mushiness, gently wash your blueberries with cold water just before serving.

When adding blueberries to a cocktail or a fresh dessert, try macerating them first with a bit of sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice.
