Orange

Orange

Orange trees have grown in Southeast Asia for centuries. In 1493, explorer Christopher Columbus brought orange seeds from Spain's Canary Islands to Haiti, where he planted the first orange orchards in the Americas.

Today, a tall glass of orange juice is breakfast’s best friend, orange slices are a staple of half-time breaks, and fresh orange adds a sweet, citrus flavor to all kinds of dishes.

The annual world production of oranges is over 70,000,000 metric tons!

Selection & Storage

Store fresh oranges at room temperature for up to 2 weeks, or for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.

The best way to store oranges is loose, rather than wrapped in a plastic bag or a container, because oranges can get moldy pretty quickly if exposed to too much moisture.

Clever Uses

To help with stomach cramps and stimulate your appetite, add a few pieces of fresh or dried orange peels to your tea.

Mix orange rinds with white vinegar to create an all natural cleaner that’s safe to use on most surfaces.

Clean your sink with oranges — cut an orange in half and dip it lightly into a dish of salt. Scrub the inside of your sink with the salted orange. Rinse thoroughly.

Place a two-inch wide piece of orange peel, pith and all, in with your brown sugar and keep in an airtight container to keep brown sugar lump-free. The skin puts moisture into the air inside the container, keeping the air damp.

Cats don’t like the scent of oranges. Keep them away from your garden or houseplants by strategically placing orange peels in the soil.

Put orange peels at the bottom of your trash can before the bag, to reduce odor and discourage insect infestations.

Sprinkle orange peels in a vegetable garden to repel slugs.
