Meet Sarah!

Sarah is the recipe developer and blogger behind Live Eat Learn. She likes to eat, travel, and take photos.

Sarah's love for food started with a love for health. She majored in nutrition in college, but realized that she didn’t actually know how to apply any of the things she was learning to food. She was cooking the same few things every week, and as a vegetarian with little cooking knowledge, was getting sick quite a bit due to a lack of variety in her diet!

"I decided I wanted to learn more about cooking and teach others who may also be uninspired in the kitchen, so about five years ago, I launched my healthy food blog, Live Eat Learn. I’m now working on the blog full-time, cooking every day, and constantly learning a ton about food!"

For her latest project, Sarah built a whole website about home-brewed kombucha called BrewBuch!

What was your favorite childhood meal?

I grew up in a pretty healthy family. “Junk food” meant Wheat Thins, and “fried food” was only something you got to eat in fast-food restaurants. My mom was a really great cook, though, and my most favorite thing she would make was tacos! My love for tacos later transformed into a love for taco soup, a recipe that’s become a complete staple in our family.

What's in your bag?

Lots of pens: Many notes means lots of multi-colored pens!

iPhone: What’s a blogger without her technology?

Train pass: I’m currently working on my Master’s in Sensory Science at a school 2.5 hours away, so I do most of my blogging from trains!

What are your kitchen essentials?

A handheld immersion blender: Use it every morning to make green smoothies.

A bunch of spices: I love playing around with spices and flavors. Having a bunch of spices easily accessible makes it easier to get some magic in your food going!

A bunch of fruit: I have a total sweet tooth, and would eat pie all day if left to my own accord. Having a big bowl of fruit makes it easier to satisfy my sweet tooth without caving and chowing down on candy.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

I think I’m most proud of my move to Holland! Last year, I hopped the big pond from America to Holland, land of tulips and cheese, to be with my Dutch boyfriend. I’d never done anything quite like this, being so far from family and friends. It’s been fascinating and exciting and sometimes confusing (hellooo language barrier), and I’m so happy I made that leap of faith.

Describe your dream kitchen or dining room.

I grew up in a house that was warm, cozy, and absolutely full of knick-knacks. This has always been what made me feel at home, but after moving to Holland, where kitchens and houses are a lot smaller, I’ve taken a liking to clean minimalism. As for my dream kitchen, we built it! It has a clean minimalist vibe, lots of workspace, and enough neatly labeled glass jars to make Marie Kondo proud.

My perfect day would be...

Exploring a new city and eating food I’ve never tried before.

I believe any problem can be solved with...

Sunshine and chocolate.

When I need liquid courage, I drink...

Bloody Marys.

Stroopwafels are a wonderful little Dutch cookie that originated in the city of Gouda (yes, the city the cheese comes from). They are made by creating two very thin waffle-like cookies and then sandwiching a thin layer of caramel in between.

To fly because I’ve spent so much money on plane tickets.

What are your favorite recipes on the app, and why?

My Roasted Chickpea Gyros are one of my favorite recipes, and are one of the most popular on my blog. They have tzatziki, my favorite dressing for anything, and crispy spiced chickpeas!

What is your advice to people who aspire to be in your field or do similar projects?

I really love the idea of 1% infinity, which I learned from Lindsay and Bjork of Pinch of Yum. If you can become just 1% better at any one thing, whether it be food photography or writing or cooking, and do that everyday, you’ll look back in a year and realize you have come so far.
