Health for Less

We’ve all been there--you’re in the grocery store trying to decide between the dollar frozen dinners and the organic foods aisle. You really need to eat better; you want to, in fact. But do you have to sacrifice your health to save money? Here are some tips to eating better without breaking the bank in the process.

Buy One, Get One

Look for sales on healthy food items, and plan meals only according to what you can purchase. If your local grocery store has a free membership program, sign up. Keep an eye out for flyers that might give good deals. Use coupons for non-food items so you can spend a little extra on healthier food options.

Don’t Throw Your Cash in the Trash

Keeping an organized kitchen and pantry goes a long way in saving money. Buying inexpensive food items is awesome, but if they get wedged in the back of the fridge and go bad, being a Savings Guru has been for nothing. Minimize waste through labeling and proper packaging.

Know the Reason for the Season

Buy local, fresh produce when it’s in season and cook with it or freeze it to use later. You can make soups, casseroles, or homemade jams! Go to the farmer’s market when it’s closing up; there may be markdowns or giveaways.

Broaden your Culinary Horizons

Take a stroll down the ethnic food aisle or visit an ethnic market and familiarize yourself with Mexican, Indian, or Chinese ingredients, among others. There are a lot of staples that are less expensive and can be used across all ethnic profiles. Chicken Tandoori, anyone?

Market Mugi Miso Ramen

SideChef

This vegan miso soup was inspired by a trip through the Santa Monica farmers market. It features local golden beets, broccolini, rainbow chard, shiitake mushrooms, spring onions, bean sprouts, and sweet potato noodles. The mugi miso paste adds an earthy, sweet base for this savory soup.

Repurpose Leftovers

Try turning few-day-old bread or a leftover whole chicken into delicious SideChef-featured recipes like bread pudding, potpie, soup, or fried rice. The possibilities are endless!
