Meet Yuki Matsumura!

I am an ordinary person with ordinary thoughts, but one thing I'm less ordinary in than the masses is that I have so many curiosities in different things. Art, nature, cooking, reading...Being creative has been the biggest focus in my life and, because of that, I do many things in general; I am currently working as a vegetarian recipe developer, a fashion model, a web designer, and an occasional ninja writer.

One thing I learned from my experience is that life is about finding and solving good problems. And the really important thing is what problems you want to work on during your lifetime. Out of the numerous problems we have today, I picked the food industry. And that is the very reason why I started my vegan/vegetarian website "Yukitchen."

I’m a mad naturalist who desperately believes in sustainable living. I also believe happiness is supported by a healthy diet. Yukitchen is my sacred place for me to share the edible inspirations from my playtime in the kitchen, and my deep love for whole foods, with a bit of quirkiness!

What was your favorite childhood meal?

Little Yuki

I wish I could just be like a normal Japanese girl, and answer this question like, "It was sushi!" or "It has been always tonkatsu!" but I don't like to lie. So I'm looking at this screen sheepishly and slowly typing this to tell you that my answer to that would be one simple word: cucumbers.

I love cucumbers. And I eat them almost every day. There's something about the texture I am so very obsessed with, and when I eat them with some lemon drops and mint, I become Remy of Ratatouille and devour the plate like there is no tomorrow. I love cucumbers.

Incidentally, my mother even told this to a national French TV show when she was getting interviewed about her daughter's food project. She very humbly explained with her loving mother-like eyes that I only ate cucumbers and she didn't even know why I became so interested in cooking. She can be such a supportive mother sometimes.

What's in your bag and what are your kitchen essentials?

In my bag: A lip balm, suncream, a book, an iPhone, a portable battery, a notebook, a black pen.

My kitchen essentials: A knife, a pot, some ginger, and enthusiasm.

What is the best or weirdest thing you've ever eaten in your travels?

Swedish Lakrits

A Swedish black candy called "lakrits." They're gummy-like sweets pretending to seem edible, but they taste like nothing but rubber to me. I don't think it's food, yet Swedes believe that it is.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Yuki on Times Square

When I saw myself on the Times Square billboard, I felt from the bottom of my heart that I had reached my goal. That was the moment my childhood dream came true: being on a billboard.

Describe your dream kitchen (laboratory) or dining room.

A kitchen from Winnie the Pooh. That idyllic, wooden kitchen has always been my dream kitchen to have!

My perfect day would be...

Sitting by the fireplace, my cat on my lap, reading a book.

I believe any problem can be solved with...

Science and constant improvements.

When I need liquid courage, I drink...

Reduce the number of people on the planet without any pain or suffering. There are too many of us now. We are using up all the limited resources and it will cause so much suffering in the future.

What is your advice to people who aspire to be in your field or do similar projects?

I'd say make a list of things you need to do, and start working on it from #1. Then #2. Then #3, and you are good to go by the time you are working on #4.
