It’s Sunday afternoon, the room is spinning and your head is pounding from all of those 3am tequila shots. Sound familiar? Well don’t worry, I've got good news for you (no, I haven't ordered you a McDonalds!). ‘Hangover-free alcohol’ is actually a thing! This new and exciting alcoholic beverage will allow you to bust out your ultimate hip-shaking dance moves and text your unwanted ex - all without the nasty hangover the next day (feelings of shame may still apply...)
A new rise of hangover-free alcohol is heading our way and it’s going to shake your cocktail up. Literally. Professor David Nutt, a former government drugs adviser of Imperial College London, has said the man-made liquor known as ‘Alcosynth’ will have the same buzz, minus the harmful side effects. Even if it does sound like somewhat of an 80’s pop band, industry veterans have had trouble tasting the difference between this and our usual fancy cocktail.
Professor Nutt has created a new ‘spirit’ aimed at eliminating the almighty hangover. Alcosynth shares the same positive effects of alcohol but it’s said to be 100 times safer. Sounds too good to be true, right? The Washington Post met up with Professor Nut who believes, “We now have found substances that can do what alcohol does in terms of giving people a relaxing experience and social experience, but without having the downsides of anger and aggression and addiction.” Okay, let me try and put this into perspective: If I was to tell you 10 years ago we would all be smoking electronic cigarettes, you probably would have laughed, so synthetic alcohol shouldn’t be as controversial, right?
Did you know that the number of alcohol-related deaths outweighs drug related? I’m not advocating that Professor Nutt has all the answers (I mean his name is surely enough to warrant a few questions) but, hey, we also did once-upon-a-time believe this advert was socially acceptable?! (see image)
Anyone claiming to find the cure to our hangover is a good friend of mine. However, simply putting an umbrella in your drink won’t disguise the fact we still know nothing about this new spirit. If people were genuinely concerned about the health benefits, the simple answer would be to drink less. Whilst I personally don’t advocate drinking less I do suggest drinking sensibly - because nobody wants to hear you singing ‘Single Ladies’ at 4am! So grab a glass of red and celebrate National Wine Day as this ‘Hangover-free Alcohol’ is still yet to arrive!
In the mean time, enjoy some truly hangover free mocktails
