What Makes a Salad Not Suck?

We’ve all been there. An attempt to eat healthy leaves us with the same boring salad day after day. Or you suffer through the subpar mix and shake to-go option from the local grocery store. We refuse to accept this! This collection will open your mind to all sorts of tantalizing salads. We’ll simply follow three basic rules:

1. No vegetables that come from cans
2. No ranch dressing
3. At least one ingredient that invokes excitement

A Surprising Dressing

Chicken Spinach Salad with Goat Cheese

Chef'd

If you’re sick of olive oil and vinegar or the lame bottles of dressing clogging your refrigerator door, this salad is for you! This spinach salad calls for a homemade dressing with a greek yogurt base, keeping it low in calories and full of protein.

A Deviation from Tradition

Roasted Vegetables and Farro Salad

Adventure Blooms

What if we told you, salads don’t have to have any greens at all! This recipe incorporates loads of roasted veggies and one of our favorite (and too often under-utilized!) grains--farro! This is an excellent way to spice up your usual salad routine.

A Dairy-Free Delight

Caesar Kale Salad

The Edgy Veg

Whether you’re vegan, lactose intolerant, or just looking for a switch up, this dairy-free take on the caesar salad is hearty, garlicky, and can be ready in just a few minutes. We love that this recipe skips boring romaine and calls for every millennial’s favorite leafy green--kale!

A Bloody Brilliant Use of Fruit

Blood Orange & Avocado Salad

30 Pounds of Apples

There’s no better way to brighten up your salad than with some fruit. Here we have a spinach salad that calls for blood oranges and avocado (remember, avos are technically fruit!) The sweetness of the fruit is rounded out by the saltiness of feta cheese for a truly remarkable salad.

A Salad of the Sea

Seaweed Salad (Wakame Salad)

Now here’s a recipe that will totally change the way you think about salad. The green base of salad is not restricted to what is found on land! Enjoy the subtle flavors of the ocean in this asian style seaweed salad that delights with flavors from soy sauce, sesame oil, and white vinegar.

A Sizzle to Your Salad

Poached Pear, Bacon, Pecan & Butter Lettuce Salad

BitterMeasures

When we say sizzle, we weren’t jokin’! That’s right--we want you to put BACON on this salad. Don’t let the number of ingredients scare you off. You’ll likely have many of these in your pantry. This salad combination is a wonderful way to impress dinner guests.

A Dose of Warmth

Roasted Butternut Squash and Quinoa Salad

Food Guru

No collection of salads is complete without getting quinoa involved. You will absolutely love the warm combination of quinoa and roasted squash. Or, throw it in the fridge and bring it to school or work the next day for a filling lunch that won’t give you a food coma.

A Healthy Indulgence

Cheeseburger Salad

The Skinny Fork

Cutting carbs, but still craving some serious yum? This cheeseburger salad was made for you. The healthy salad format is balanced by succulent ground beef, sharp cheddar cheese, and a dressing that will make you forget you’re not actually eating a big juicy cheeseburger.
